Engine Remapping Northern Ireland

Engine remapping for Northern Ireland drivers, from our Ballymena workshop. Autotune (NI) Ltd tunes the engine control unit (ECU) software on almost all current petrol and diesel cars.

The software is laid out in a series of maps, which is where the name remapping comes from. We adjust those maps for your car rather than loading a generic file.

Maps can be tailored for performance or for better economy. Each one is written for the car in front of us, so you get software that suits its engine, its condition and the way you drive.

Custom maps written for each car, never a generic file

How a Remap Is Done

Around 90% of cars can be remapped through the OBD port, the same plug used for diagnostics. We read a copy of the original map onto a laptop, the team modifies it, and the new map is written back into the car.

Some ECUs are protected. In those cases we connect to the ECU's pins, or open it in background debug mode (BDM) on the bench, which takes longer and is priced to match.

Many cars from 2009 on use a virtual read, which means we work from the factory software rather than what is stored in the car, so any earlier tuning is replaced. We will tell you which method your car needs before you book.

Engine Remapping Services

Our engine remapping services start with Stage 1 and go as far as your hardware allows. We define Stage 1 as the most power a standard engine can make without compromising safety and reliability, with no parts needing changed.

From there, Autotune (NI) Ltd can add software features, develop custom maps for unusual builds and fit the hardware that lets a car go further. Each car responds differently, so we talk through your goals before any work starts.

Stage 1 Remapping

The first step for a standard car, with no hardware changes.

Manufacturers write their software to cover emissions, fuel quality and many other factors, so performance is rarely the priority. Stage 1 optimises the factory hardware for more power and torque within safe limits.

Custom Tuning

Software developed for setups we have not seen before.

If your car has a combination of engine and parts we have not tuned before, we develop software for it. This usually takes two of the team several working days, so we will talk through whether you need it first.

Tuning for Economy

More torque low in the rev range can mean less throttle and fewer gear changes.

Diesel engines in particular can gain economy when they have more torque than you need, although your right foot is still the biggest factor. Petrol cars usually gain little, and we will be honest about what to expect.

Launch Control

Set your launch revs and hold boost between gears.

Launch control and no-lift shift are available on selected makes and models. We can set the launch RPM with the clutch held and hold boost between gears, so the car pulls hard from a standing start.

Map Switching

Different power levels for different driving modes.

Driving mode remapping lets you run lower or normal power in everyday modes and full power in sport. Availability depends on the make and model, so ask us what your car supports.

Start-Stop and Exhaust Flaps

Small software changes that make a car nicer to live with.

Depending on the model, we can switch off start-stop or change how the exhaust flaps behave, keeping them open or tying them to the driving mode. Contact us to check what is possible on your car.

Hardware Upgrades After Stage 1

Past Stage 1, the next gains come from hardware. We do not sell Stage 2 or Stage 3 packages, because every car has different limits.

Autotune (NI) Ltd works through each limiting factor in turn, whether that is the turbo, injectors, intercooler or exhaust, and supplies parts from leading brands as well as local businesses.

Once the hardware is fitted, the software is written to match, so the whole car works together. Tell us your budget or the power you want, and we will show you what works for your car.

Is Remapping Safe?

A remap from Autotune (NI) Ltd keeps your engine within safe limits. We will not do anything that puts your car at risk, and two identical cars are tuned the same way, which is what makes the results consistent.

Worn parts are the usual cause of problems after tuning, not the software. A tired clutch, for example, may slip with extra torque, and a new one solves it. That is why we suggest owning a car for a while and having it serviced by a good mechanic before it is tuned.

Our software stays as we wrote it unless someone else reprograms the car, and we are always happy to answer questions before you decide.

Get an Engine Remapping Quote

Contact Autotune (NI) Ltd for an engine remapping quote. Tell us the make, model, engine and year, plus any modifications already fitted, and what you want from the car.

We will tell you whether your car can be done through the OBD port or needs the ECU on the bench, and price it to match. If an easier method turns out to be possible on the day, you only pay the lower cost.

We remap cars for drivers in Ballymena, Randalstown, Antrim and Ballyclare, and from across Northern Ireland. Appointments are booked by calling the office.
